“Button,” Espiritu Santo

An Australian or (New Zealand) PBO sighted two life rafts this morning about one third of the way up the west shore of the island. Investigation by a Duck (J2F) have revealed it was Wendy’s crew. The J2F flew back with two of the most seriously injured. The only losses were the two mechs who never got out of the plane. The remaining crew and Wendy will be brought in later today.

Read a very excellent book this afternoon – “Headhunting in the Solomons” by Caroline Mytinger. Seem strange to read peacetime details of the exotic spots which we fly over.

The food is terrible lately. Only SPAM, Vienna sausage for meat; dehydrated potatoes and carrots; canned spinach and peaches; and canned butter, which very closely imitates the properties of water pump grease — in other words complete insolubility. Hours after eating it, the mouth is covered with a film of lard.
