S.S. President Polk

Woke at Gram’s after excellent sleep. Got shoes, also Xmas cards. Found two more suits of whites while rummaging around. Damn lucky. Said good-bye again — much easier and more cheerful. Bop drove me to town. Had lunch with him at Joe DiMaggio’s — a darn nice place. Peg and husband came down and said goodbye.

Spent the next few hours writing the Xmas cards — sent 32. A very beautiful card — large, birdlike plane against a Wagnerian sky.

Have a beautiful cabin on this ship. In fact one of the best cabins on the ship. Good bunch of roommates.

Wonderful meal in luxurious dining room.

Ship pulled out of berth at 2000. San Francisco looked beautiful with its twinkling lights and high hills. Alcatraz, the “Rock,” looked like a fairy castle, all lit up.

Went to bed with ship parked in bay.
