Netherlands East Indies

No air raid today — heard that the P-40s drove them off. Singapore is on its last legs. The British have blown up the naval dockyards.

Tokyo radio reported the capture of a PBY and a radio man a few days ago. One of our boats today saw a floating PBY-type life raft southeast of Borneo. It was empty, except for a few bits of clothing. Was about one third full of water. Today also, Tokyo radio reported that they have some American naval officers prisoners at Balikpapan. Well I guess that is the end of poor old Jim Hogan until the war is over — a pretty tough break.

B-17Es reported to set afire a Japanese carrier south of the Celebes. The fighters from her deck were seen landing in the water — out of fuel and ammunition. She may have sunk later.
