“Cactus,” Guadalcanal

Swam in the Lunga river — a muddy but blessed stream. Without it we would soon go mad in the heat and dirt. Slept and read mystery stories.

Out on a moonlight raid last night. Bomb the new Jap bomber strip at Vila Plantation on Kolombangara Island. The searchlight defense was excellent. It caught me twice, once catching me at the instant of illumination. AA light. Could see heavy AA and the fires at Munda. Heavy electrical storms near target. Dropped six 500s and ten 100s on revetment area. Heavy clouds prevented my seeing the ships in the harbor, till I was leaving — to my disappointment.
