“Cactus,” Guadalcanal

Made a lone moonlight raid on Munda between two and five this morning. Jap searchlights picked me up as soon as my bombs were away and prevented my seeing the results. I believe they hit the revetment area. I suppose it all maybe considered worthwhile, even though I succeeded only in killing one small bewildered and miserable Jap, whose thoughts of home were rudely blasted into eternity.

“Phil” Phillips of VF-72 dropped in this morning to say goodbye. His whole squadron was leaving on a DC-3 for Tontouta and the states! Lucky devils! Gave him my Jap major’s sword to take back with him. He promised to send it to my mother for me.
