“Cactus,” Carney Field, Guadalcanal

The transport McCauley was torpedoed and sunk by a sub last night as she proceeded down the “Slot” toward Tulagi.

Weather has improved and Army B-24s have been taking off from Carney Field in a steady stream all morning. Today should mark some of the heaviest fighting as Jap plane reinforcements from Truk and Rabaul will have arrived.

(Later) Any apparent improvement in the weather this morning was wholly an illusion. The rain and soup moved in again before noon. We unluckily seem to have moved up to this area in time to catch the rainy season after putting up with three months of it at Button. The Button wet season seems to run January to May, well the Cactus wet season runs May to August.
