“Button,” Espiritu Santo

Had a bit of luck in an accident this afternoon. I was taking Glanz’ 101-B-4 out on the test top after installation of a new propeller. As I started to take off the prop governor went out on the new prop and I ceased the takeoff run and throttled back. However the brakes failed partially and I was unable to stop the plane in time to avoid smashing an expensive Army searchlight at the end of the runway. The plane stopped about 3 feet short of the edge of the embankment at the end of the runway! A little more speed and the plane would’ve been a total wreck. The searchlight, a total loss, cost $13,000!
