Piva Uncle Field, Bougainville

Took Adm’ls. Halsey, Fitch and Carney and Gen’l. Riley to Piva U today. The area was a terrific contrast to its state a month ago. Piva Yoke (the fighter strip) has been abandoned because of the Jap shelling while the few planes in Piva Uncle have been concentrated in the NW end to escape the Jap shells. At night most planes retire to Treasury. SCAT has been shifted to Torokina strip, which despite frequent shelling, is as busy as ever. We stayed for lunch and then returned to Treasury for the night.
