“Cactus,” Carney Field, Guadalcanal

Took Adm’l. Fitch and Gen’l. Harmon (“Jr.”) up to the Green Island fighter strip (5000 feet) despite our damaged wing. On the way up we saw a PBY and a TBF working over some Jap installations just west of Cape Hanpan on Buka Island. The Japs were firing AA, but the two planes ignored it at 200-300 feet and proceeded to start three large fires along the shore.

Stayed at Green about two hours then returned with Gen’l. Barraclough (N.Z.) added to the passenger list. Dropped Gen’l. Harmon off at Piva U and returned to Henderson Field — damn tired.
