“Button,” Espiritu Santo

Patrol to Ontong Java and Rekata. Passed along SW coast of Malaita on the way back. Not quite as heavily populated as the NE coast. Villages extremely neat and orderly; one even had a very excellently kept central “common” of short green grass. Almost every village has a small church of native “thatch” architecture, in several instances having “windows” of unmistakably “Gothic” influence! Also noticed a road approximately 5 to 10 miles in length through the jungle; built by the natives and lined with the logs of felled trees. Several plantation settlements were quite comfortable looking. This part of the world would be a beautiful place to live if it weren’t for the unpleasant and unhealthy climate.
