North Pacific

280 miles off Baja California. 800 to go. Heard a funny story today concerning one of the medical officers on the Langley. He was so excited as she started to sink, he raced up to the ships mailbox, and dropped his wallet in — reasoning that if anything would get through it would be the U.S. mail! Unfortunately, that particular bit of mail will sit on the bottom of the Indian Ocean for all eternity. The poor medical officer, a good fellow – is quite embarrassed about it – however, he confided that it was an “iron in the fire” – all he has to do now is drop one or two more wallets in mailboxes and he’ll be cinched for a medical discharge (mental).
