“Cactus,” Guadalcanal

Rest day. Swam and slept. There were five officers in Fuzzy’s plane (four in Lehman’s); one was an Australian coastwatcher named Train. Those coastwatchers are are worth their weight in gold. MacKenzie, chief coastwatcher for the Solomons, was concerned over Train’s loss. A few pilots were sure of having seen a mid-air explosion over the Russells on our way up to the target.

Had our first issue of beer today. Haven’t had any since leaving Oahu. Kept an armed guard on the supply.
