Pearl Harbor

Day off. Swam all morning. Two lengths of the pool underwater (150 ft.)

The papers announced that one of the Roosevelt kids has just been made a major – pretty smelly politics if you ask me – the president and his son both should’ve had their asses kicked. If I were in the Army now I’d be a Captain, and if I were in the Marine Corps I’d be a First Lieutenant, but in this goddamn navy I’ll likely be an Ensign till the day I die.

Went into the town in the afternoon and in my wanderings through the shops I came across the first general genuine Alexandrite I’ve been able to find in four years. A very fine one from Ceylon – $900 – I’m tempted. Don’t care too much for the setting – it’s surrounded by diamonds – a little on the gaudy side – however, four years is a long hunt.
