Pearl Harbor
Raised Oahu about 8 a.m. and were disembarked in Pearl Harbor about 1 p.m. Reported to my new outfit, VP-51. They no longer have the old crates VP-22 left them, but are flying PBY-5As, which isn’t bad at all. Quarters consist of a cot (alà Norfolk) on the “lanai” (porch) of the old BOQ. When they said “We’ll have to put you out on the lanai,” I thought they meant a ship in the harbor and started to swear. Soon learned my mistake, however. Cocktails and dinner (cafeteria style — 35¢) at the new BOQ, and to bed after a short moonlight swim in the Officers Pool nearby.
