Pearl Harbor

Left Johnston at 0930. Ran into a severe storm on the way home — 150 miles thick. Was on instruments for 45 minutes. Visibility was less than 50 feet at times. Old Oahu sure looks good after Johnston.

Found a lot of mail waiting for me in my box.

Mr. Moffett, who has been informed at Johnston of “Pojo” and Lathrop taking out a patrol was not pleased with my judgment on the matter, but thought punishment would be useless. Learned that he stood up for actions against the station skipper down there. He’s a damn fine fellow — what a contrast to Erdman! However, as far as I’m concerned, my allowing them to take out the patrol was not as foolish or unthinking as it sounds it first. The experience they gained is worth many, many months of flying second, or first, pilot to someone.
