Barbers Point NAS

Today is the fifth day of steady rain. Heavy rain squalls begin sweeping over the island in a continuous train last Friday – and it’s still going on! Everything is flooded. Crops are ruined. Landslides off Diamond Head have ruined roads and property. Kahala is flooded so badly, people are moving out of their homes. Water is spread over Waikiki to a depth of 6 inches to 2 feet. Most telephones are out. Old Mrs. Hedemann at the Halekulani, says it’s been about 25 years since I’ve had anything like this. Yet, not a word is said in the newspapers about it, due to the policy of the military intelligence.

Went out to the Halekulani about noon. Couldn’t reach anyone (Beeza) so had dinner with the two RAF officers, who are leaving tomorrow morning for Australia.

During the meal I spouted off to Capt. Keliher (Chief of Operations for Nimitz) most of my feelings about the Naval Aviation. Said nothing about the “yellowness” of some of our superiors, as that is not a very pleasant subject, but I let him have the rest full blast! It was his own fault, as he egged me into it, when he heard that I had quit the Academy in disgust. I laid out my argument excellently and when I had finished he was so mad he wouldn’t speak any of us for almost ten minutes.
