Barking Sands Field

Six of us flew up to Barking Sands Field (Army) at Kauai this morning. Pushed the planes into the revetments and lay around the rest of the day.

Dinner consisted of 50% Army mess-gear difficulties and 50% food. Went to a thoroughly stinking movie after dinner (“The Mad Monster”). Whew.

Retired to our cots at 9:30 p.m. and began a battle with mosquitoes that lasted till dawn. About 11:30, Oliver and I gave ground before the furiously delivered mosquito attack, and retreated to “previously prepared positions” (another room). Entrenched there behind tightly closed doors and windows, we fought a rearguard action and finally eliminated, or rather annihilated, the enemy’s immediate forces. Sank exhausted to our cots, only to be roused three hours later by a call to man our planes.
