“Cactus,” Carney Field, Guadalcanal

Six months ago today we left Barbers Point, Oahu. No relief in sight.

Went down to the beach today and was annoyed to find that a tanker anchored just offshore and thoroughly garbaged up the water.

Edgar gave us the late dope tonight on another big air battle over Rendova today. Forty-three Jap planes (28 Zeros, 15 Bettys) were shot down to our losses of 3 fighters.

Wink Heywood with the #1 Sector today bombed a Jap CL (Katori class) just north of Kavieng. One hit made the Jap leak oil and slowed him down slightly, but otherwise undamaged.
