Adelaide, South Australia
Another damn nice Australian city – even most of the fellows were sorry to leave it, despite the fact that a good number of them have been away from the States for years and are undergoing an agony of anticipation.
Spent most of the day in town. Wrote a letter to the American consul in Melbourne, asking him to try and locate my bag, or rather, trunk – damn that thing. Next time I come out here I’ll bring nothing but two small handbags, and I wear a pair of boots – good protection against mosquitoes and underbrush – 11 inchers should be perfect.
Got a kick out of the trains around here. They look at least 80 years old, being very close to general design to what we used in the Civil War – however, that refers only to external appearances.
They started unloading the troops from this at 0830 and when we returned from town at 1930 they were still unloading. They sure left a mess behind. These Australians aren’t as neat and clean as Americans are — however it is almost a national vice with us.
