Henderson Field, Guadalcanal

Saw a P-38 catch fire about 2,500 feet over Lunga Pt. this afternoon. By the time he made it 180° turn and headed for Fighter #2, he was really blazing. I’d have jumped, but he landed it and jumped out while the plane careened down the runway and piled up in the ditch. The fire was put out soon enough to leave a few salvageable parts.
